June 4, 2013 - Oregon Central Coast
In the morning we drove south from Waldport to explore the Cape Perpetua area. This area has one of the few old growth groves of spruce trees on the coast and is accessible from a hiking trail. At the top of the trail is an expansive view of the coast below and on this clear day, the we could see for miles up and down the coast line. There are tons of wildflowers in bloom and purple foxglove are particularly prolific. We stopped at a place called the Devil's Churn where the sea rushes into a narrow gap in the basalt. The water booms and crashes in the narrow chasm and you can really feel the power of the sea.

In the afternoon we drove north on 101 about 15 miles to the town of Newport. We were planning on spending time at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and view the sunset from there. However, when we got to the park, we were told it would close at 5:00 p.m. So we took a few quick pictures and decided to go back tomorrow morning. There are tide pools and a very active sea bird nesting area by the lighthouse, so we want to spend more time there. Since we couldn't explore the lighthouse area, we decided to check out the historic district of Newport instead. The harbor in the historic district is still a very active fishing area. The boats unload and process the daily catch right in the harbor. There are lots of shops, eateries and bars in the area.
